Marinated in a homemade chili garlic sauce, these wings are sure to bring the heat to the backyard BBQ. Inspired by the traditional flavors of Szechuan/Sichuan (southwestern Chinese cuisine), this recipe is bold in flavor and definitely spicy!

Ingredients

  • 2 dozen chicken wing sections
  • 1 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp ginger, minced
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup chili paste
  • 1/4 cup + 2 tbsp seasoned rice vinegar
  • 1 tsp crushed red pepper/chili flakes
  • 2 tbsp garlic, chopped
  • 1/2 cup hot honey
  • 1/4 cup Sichuan chili crisp
  • 1 tsp Chinese 5 spice
  • Sesame seeds
  • Green onions, sliced thin

Tools

Directions

  • Make your sauce/marinade by combining soy sauce, ginger, sugar, chili paste, vinegar, red pepper flakes, garlic, honey, chili crisp, and Chinese 5 spice into a large container or bag. Reserve 1/3 of this sauce for coating the wings later.
  • Add chicken wings to the homemade marinade, cover and refrigerate. Allow to marinate for at least 2 hours. Pro Tip: Marinate overnight for best results.
  • When you're ready to grill, preheat your grill to 450°F.
  • Add the marinated grills to the lower rack of your grill, and rotate often with tongs to ensure even cooking and coloring.
  • Grill until the wings reach an internal temperature of 165°, then remove and toss with the remaining sauce/marinade.
  • Optional garnish: top with sesame seeds and thinly sliced green onions
