Carbon Series FAQs

Do I need any experience to use a pellet grill?

Not at all. The Carbon Series was built for beginners and pit masters alike, with easy-to-use features: The brand new burn system utilizes a heat diffuser for an even cooking surface beside an easy-install grease management tray that makes cleanup a breeze.

What are wood pellets and where do I buy them?

Wood pellets are small pieces of natural hardwood that serve as a heat source, traditionally used for a smokier, cleaner burn that carries a more robust flavor. You can shop our full selection of hardwood pellets here on Pitboss.com

How do I know when my food is done?

Pellet smoking or grilling is about cooking to temperature, not time. That’s why every Carbon Series Grill comes with a meat probe, allowing to-the-minute reads so you can follow your recipe to perfection.

Is it safe to leave the grill unattended while it cooks?

While you should always monitor your cook, the Pit Boss Carbon Series includes a built-in start up and cool down cycle, managed from the P.I.D. digital control board and programmed with an automatic re-ignition cycle if the flame goes out. The built-in cool down cycle safely burns out remaining pellets after shutdown.

What happens if something goes wrong?

Every carbon series grill is backed by a 3-year warranty. Our top rated U.S. based Customer CARE Team will always help you keep the smoke rolling.

Can I sear with the Carbon Series?

Yes! Topping out at 500°F, the Carbon Series delivers a mouthwatering crust for your steaks, shrimp, veggies and more.

Is the Carbon Series a pellet grill or smoker?

Every Pit Boss Barrel Grill can be considered a pellet smoker or a pellet grill. The details are in the temperature: Typically, smoking temperatures are below 250°F. Baking temperatures run from 300-400°F, while grilling temperatures reach 400°F and above. The Carbon Series covers it all, with a range of 180°F-500°F.

What is P.I.D?

The Carbon Series uses a P.I.D. control board to keep temperatures stabile and stop spikes. A P.I.D. controller will develope an algorithm that will automatically feed just the right amount of pellets to ensure your grill gets and STAYs at your set temperature.

What is a proper startup and why is it important?

Start your grill with the lid open and set to SMOKE for 5-10 minutes. Once you see a thick white cloud of smoke seep out of the grill and hear the flame rolling, you're good to shut the lid and set your desired temperature. Proper startup is crucial to your cook, allowing pellets’ combustible gasses to dissipate and leave the barrel. Improper start up could result in temperature issues and/or flame outs.
