About Combo Grills

Pit Boss’s lineup of combo grills gives you two cooking systems on one appliance. The Lockhart Platinum Pellet/Smoker Combo is our flagship grill and smoker combo. It pairs a full wood pellet grill with a dedicated double-door smoking cabinet and a Flame Broiler lever for direct-flame searing. You won’t have to choose between smoky, low-and-slow flavor and fast, direct heat. You’ll get both in a single purchase.

How it works is simple. One side holds a steady low temperature for smoking, roasting, and slow cooks, while the other sears and grills at high heat. That's versatility without complexity: a full outdoor kitchen in one footprint, with no second grill to buy, store, or maintain.

Pit Boss also offers combo grills through retail partners, including the DX Series 1020 at Lowe's, the Charleston 1020 Onyx Edition at Walmart, and the Competition Series Pellet Grill & Gas Griddle Combo at Academy Sports + Outdoors, so there's a combo grill for nearly any backyard.

General

What is a grill and smoker combo?

A grill and smoker combo pairs two dedicated cooking spaces in one unit: a wood pellet grill on one side and a separate smoking cabinet on the other. Instead of moving food between two appliances, you get direct grilling heat in one chamber and true low-and-slow smoking space in the other, running at the same time. The Lockhart Platinum Pellet/Smoker Combo is built exactly this way, pairing a full pellet grill with a double-door smoking cabinet.

See Can Grills Sear and Smoke? Combo Grills Explained for more on how dual cooking chambers work together.

How much backyard space does a combo grill need?

Combo grills are larger than a single-function grill since they house two cooking systems, so plan for roughly the footprint of two standard grills side by side, plus clearance for the lid, shelves, and safe operating distance from your house or fence.

For example, the Lockhart Platinum Pellet/Smoker Combo is 55" wide × 66.9" high × 30.7" deep, and it requires a 36-inch clearance from combustible construction on the sides and back.

Do combo grills cost more to run than a single-fuel grill?

Not inherently. You're only paying for the fuel on the side you're actually using; a pellet-and-gas combo doesn't burn both fuels at once unless you're cooking on both sides simultaneously. Pellet grills are generally efficient with hardwood pellet consumption, and gas or griddle sides use standard propane, so day-to-day running cost tracks closely with owning either grill type on its own.

How do you reverse-sear on a grill with a smoker?

Start your cut low and slow on the smoker or pellet side, typically 225°F–275°F, until it's close to your target internal temperature. Then move it to the direct-flame side, or open the Flame Broiler lever, to finish at high heat for a seared crust. See Can Grills Sear and Smoke?
